Police Auctions - By Damian Sofsian

An auction is a sale where the price is set by bidding. The person making the highest bid gets to purchase the goods. Public auctions are conducted by police departments periodically throughout the year. Police auctions are generally referred to as "government' auctions, but essentially these are auctions where a government entity sells items seized either because of non-payment of taxes or because of criminal activity. Goods sold in such auctions are either unclaimed or items for which the police department has been unable to locate a title holder. The police department does not sell land, cars, or boats at such auctions.

All goods are sold to the highest bidder and must be paid for on the location immediately after the items are sold. It is generally seen that sales tax is added to the purchase price. All goods are sold "as is." There is no warranty on any commodity sold at a police auction. Goods cannot be returned and money is not generally reimbursed. Personal checks drawn on local bank accounts may be accepted only after providing proper identification. As a general policy credit cards are not accepted for payment.

The main advantages of such police auctions are that goods sold at such auctions are usually sold for a minimum price. This is because such goods do not possess a title of ownership. A little bit of luck combined with adequate research can help people pick up great stuff at a reasonable price. Generally, it is seen that anything and everything can be purchased at a police auction. However, care should be taken while purchasing any commodity. Often these goods may not be of good quality or may be heavily damaged. Police auctions do not guarantee the quality of the goods sold.

Information relating to police auctions can be obtained by visiting and making inquiries at the respective police department. Details regarding the date and time can also be obtained online on a number of websites.

eBay Auction Home Business Tutorial: Registering As An eBay Seller - By Chris Bryant

Past eBay auction home business tutorials have concentrated on deciding what to sell, what price to charge, what payment methods to accept...but once we've decided on all of this, we've got to go out to eBay and create an account!

Starting an account on eBay is a simple process, and even better, it's free! If you're 18 or older and you've got Internet access, you can have an active eBay account in just minutes. Just go to www.ebay.com, click on "Register Now", and you're off!

Having said that, here's what to expect during the registration process and a few hints on choosing a username.

eBay will ask you for a valid email address. Almost everyone has an email address through a free service such as Yahoo or Microsoft Hotmail.. and that "almost everyone" includes scammers. For that reason, if you use a free email service, eBay will require credit card information from you in order to validate your identity. eBay's registration is free, so you won't be charged. (As an eBay seller, you'll need to provide eBay with a valid credit card number anyway. Buyers aren't required to do so.)

You'll need to create an eBay ID. Your potential customers are going to see this name every single time they look at one of your postings, so don't get too crazy. If you hate the one you come up with, you can change it after you've had the current one for 30 days. Don't get into the habit of changing it too often, because that does make some potential buyers suspicious.

You'll be prompted to create a password, and also to choose a "secret question" that eBay will ask you in case you forget your password. I'm not a big fan of sites that have secret questions for you to choose from rather than writing your own, but most sites do that. Whatever you do, don't choose the "What is your mother's maiden name?" question. The answer to that is easier for someone else to get than you might think.

You'll be asked for your date of birth, just to make sure that you're of legal age to do business on eBay.

Finally, you'll be asked to agree to eBay's User Agreement. It's boring, but you should read it before checking the "I Agree" button. Once you do this, you're almost in! eBay will now send a verification email to the address you gave them, and you must click on a link inside that email in order to finish the signup process.

Congratulations! You're now ready to post items on eBay. You're going to see some odd symbols and numbers next to your eBay auction username, and we'll talk about those and what they mean in my next free eBay auction tutorial!

Taking Better Ebay Photos - By Gregg Pennington

One of the most vital elements in an online auction is the photography of the item being auctioned. People want to see pictures of things they are contemplating buying. Approximately 90% of all auctions on eBay have images. More than 80% of buyers will skip over an auction without photos.

A photograph may be worth well more than 1000 words when the item being sold is for example, a rare coin. Potential bidders can view the coin in close up detail, and verify the seller's stated description of the item, as well as any certificates of authenticity. Even less tangible items like software sell much better in auctions where a photograph of the box is provided. If the item you are selling has any damage or flaws, make sure to document this with a picture.

If you will just be an occasional seller, and you don't own a digital camera, it is very easy and inexpensive to have your 35mm photos digitized. If you will be holding regular auctions with photographs of your items, you may want to purchase a digital camera. An inexpensive digital camera will work fine; 3 megapixels will be more than adequate for most auction photos.

For taking online auction photos, you should choose a medium resolution, (for example 1024x768 pixels). This should allow you to get a good sharp image without a long upload time. When photographing smaller items, use the macro setting on your digital camera which allows you to get closer to the item. This will create a narrow depth of field, bringing your item into sharp focus, and minimizing background distractions. If your camera will not take extreme close up photos, don't worry; you can always crop and enlarge your pictures later. Your goal is for the featured item to take up as much of the photograph as possible.

Choosing the right background for your auction photographs can turn average pictures into powerful selling tools. Most importantly, the background should not distract attention from the item being photographed. Your background should be plain and contrast with your item. Using too light a background color with a light colored item can cause the picture to appear "washed out". Remove any clutter from view of the camera, and smooth out any wrinkles in a fabric backdrop if using one. Hardwood floors can be excellent backgrounds for a variety of auction photos, as they create a warm, natural glow in your pictures, yet do not draw attention away from the item for sale. A background that complements your item will make your photographs look professional and could influence potential bidders to favor your item over other similar offerings.

If possible, experiment with taking some of your auction photos outdoors on an overcast day, or indoors near a window. The natural soft lighting will show more detail in your pictures. If you must work indoors, consider using a tripod, allowing you to get good pictures without using a flash. A flash can cause an unwanted glare when photographing a reflective item. When using an artificial light source, try different light positioning until you get the best possible illumination.

If you are photographing something two dimensional like postage stamps or baseball cards, you will get the most revealing photographs shooting your item straight on. For other more three dimensional subjects, shooting at an angle will let you maximize the perception of depth. Experiment with varying angles until you find the one you prefer.

When photographing large items for auction like vehicles, many of the previously mentioned rules apply. The car should be photographed from a variety of angles, and there should be as little clutter as possible in the background; especially trash, or anything else that could give a negative impression of the value of the vehicle. If you are like most of us, you probably don't have a suitable place to photograph an automobile indoors. Since you will be shooting outdoors, choose either a cloudy day or the hours of dusk or twilight for the best clarity and the most attractive photos. You will have to stand back a bit to get an entire vehicle in frame, so try to pick a place where you won't have people walking through your background.

Now you have some fantastic photos of your item or items for sale, and you have them saved on your computer in either JPG or GIF format using a descriptive name (e.g., painting_2.JPG). Ebay offers basic and enhanced picture services. Enhanced picture services allow you to crop, rotate, and adjust the brightness and contrast of your photos before uploading. You can also upload them to your own web service if you prefer; however, eBay requires that you use HTML in your listing to display more than one externally hosted picture. There are several good websites that offer free image hosting service for remote hosting of pictures for auction sites such as Ebay and Yahoo.

The number of pictures you show in your auction will vary, depending on the type of item being sold, and what your competition is doing. Search some auction listings to see what competitors are doing with their photographs, and how many they are using. Put yourself in the place of a potential buyer; is your listing providing enough detail both visual and written to make your buyer feel comfortable bidding? Will the winning bidder be satisfied that the item they received was accurately portrayed in your listing, and therefore leave better feedback? In highly competitive markets, detailed, professional-looking photographs can give you the edge you need to be successful in online auctions.

Free Dropshippers: What are Wholesale Dropshippers and How to Find them for Free - By Emma Drosy

What are wholesale dropshippers? And is it possible to find free dropshippers? You may have heard of wholesale dropshipping, and you’ve probably heard that using them is a great way to make money if you’ve heard anything at all. But for many, even those fluent in using the Internet, wholesale dropshippers and even more free dropshippers remain shrouded in mystery. How do you contact them? How do you find them? What, exactly, do they do?

Wholesale dropshippers like free dropshippers are exactly what the name might select. These are companies who sell products, at wholesale prices, and work with you to “drop ship” those products directly to the customers that you sell them to. You do the selling. They deliver the product and sell the product to you. Using a wholesale free dropshipper, you can then charge whatever you like for that product.

This is why using free dropshippers can be very lucrative, for some. The trick is in finding true wholesale dropshippers or free dropshippers (those truly offering good products, at wholesale products) that don’t charge too much for their products and deliver in a timely fashion. If you can find a free dropshipper to work with, and successfully sell, you can make a great income for yourself.

When you want to search for free wholesale dropshippers, you’ll find a lot of information on the Internet. You’ll find so many of these free dropshippers on the Internet, in fact, that not all of them will be very reliable (or, in fact, very cheap). You may want to consider using other sources to find free dropshippers, such as the yellow pages. Listen to word of mouth. If you have any friends involved with free dropshippers, talk to them. Read customer feedback on any free dropshippers you are considering. Don’t be afraid to research the company before you work with them. In fact, it’s always good to research any wholesale free dropshippers before you use them. This way, you can almost guarantee that you are making the right choice.

Start out small when working with free dropshippers. See how small orders are handled before you begin working on larger orders. Test the waters before making a commitment, and shop around to find the free dropshippers that work best for you and your needs.

Good Luck Finding Free Dropshippers

3 Powerful Ebay Pricing Secrets That Will Make Your Items Sell Like Crazy - By Christopher Liberson

One of the reasons why your items aren't selling, is because of your bad pricing strategy. In this article, I shall be giving you 3 powerful ebay pricing strategies that will make your items sell like crazy. You will also get a free link to a recommended ebay resource that I constantly use to make over $30,000 monthly on ebay.

Here are 3 powerful ebay pricing strategies that you can implement immediately:

1. "Go for it" Strategy: To use this strategy effectively, all you need to do is list your item for 10 days, starting on a Thursday. This will ensure that your listing allows bidders to push up the price themselves. That way, you can make a bigger profit than you would have with any Buy it Now price.

2. "Few dollars More" Strategy: What uou do here is, set your item bidding price to the normal Buy it Now price that you would usually charge. Then set your Buy it Now price for the same item, a little bit higher(make it a few dollars above). What your prospective customers would think is that, they don't need to bid for the item when they could easily buy it immediately. This method will bring you a lot of profits.

3."One dollar less" Strategy: This is a very good technique that keeps on making huge profits for those who use them properly. When you see your competotors list an item that you also stock, watch their Buy it Now prices and also list your own item by matching their titles closely. Don't copy their titles word for word! But there is a difference between you and them - put your Buy it Now price, one dollar less than theirs. Prospective customers will be dying to purchase your item simply because your item is one dollar less expensive.

As revealed, the three powerful strategies above, will make your items sell like crazy and this will increase your profits. Start making use of this secrets today!

Local Yahoo Groups Taking Over eBay - By Kerry Mann

With eBay fee hikes the cost of selling goods online has forced many eBayers to search for other means to sell there items. This has spurred a recent growth in local Yahoo groups. These groups can be found anywhere around the world, by searching yahoo groups.

One of the most popular groups is called free-cycle. Free-cycle is a Yahoo group where users can post items that they no longer want or items that they might need. No money is involved. It’s local pickup so no shipping costs. Its a great idea and great for the enviroment (less waste).
A Yahoo group that I think will eventually be able to compete with eBay is Barter/Sales/Trade Groups. With these groups you can post items that you have for sale or items that you are looking for, or that you want to trade. This is a good way to make some extra money. These Yahoo groups overcome the major issues that most people have with buying or selling on eBay:

1. Shipping-costs

2. Selling Fees (of which have become a boiling point of ebayers to do the recent increase)

3. Trust (many people are hesitant to buy on eBay because they don’t trust they will receive there item)

This is NOT the case with similar Yahoo groups because you pick the items up locally.

Some other benefits:

* Sales are made locally so you can interact with your community and meet your neighbors

* These sales are immediate so you don’t have to wait 7 days like an online auction

* Its great for the environment, you are selling it or free-cycling it.

* Its a fun and easy way to make money

eBay’s biggest advantage is their selection, but with the increasing popularity of local groups, I think people are going to find it an easier way to sell things online

eBay Safe Buying Tips - By Peter Andrues

It's important to remember that eBay is like an online flea market or swap meet. There will always be someone trying to sell things that most people wouldn’t touch. The trouble is that online, when you can't physically view the merchandise, so these people can be a little harder to spot. Here are some tips to make your eBay experience more enjoyable and safe.

Know Your Seller...

This, by far, is the most important research you must do before placing your bid on eBay. Getting to know a little about your seller before you bid on their item will make for a much smoother purchase.

1) Review the seller’s feedback and member profile.

Check the seller's eBay feedback before you make a bid. The feedback rating will give you a good idea about the trustworthiness of your trading partner. One or two neutrals or negatives can be overlooked due to the fickle nature of some buyers, however if a trend of poor service or item quality comments is visible you may want to avoid the seller entirely. If a seller has no feedback or negative feedback, contact the seller before bidding to get a feel for their customer service.

2) Ask the seller questions.

Email the seller with questions by clicking the “Ask seller a question” link. If you have won an item, you can request the seller’s contact information to get more information.

3) Review the seller’s policies on shipping, payments and returns.

Shipping and handling – Review shipping and handling charges before you bid, and ask to have your item shipped and insured in a traceable manner. Avoid sellers who either won't disclose or charge exorbitant shipping charges.

Payment – Consider paying with PayPal or with a credit card, as most offer 100% consumer protection. Be careful when sellers only accept one form of payment, especially when the seller requests cash. NEVER PAY WITH CASH and use caution when paying with cash equivalents such as wire transfers.

Returns – Examine the seller's return policy carefully before you bid. Contact the seller before you bid with any questions about the return policy. Some questions you might ask include how long do you have to return the item, who pays shipping and handling, and under what circumstances can you return the item.

Know your item...

Read the description fully. Most misunderstandings result from buyers not carefully reading the item description in the auction listing. Use caution if the price is significantly lower than similar auction items. If the price seems too good to be true, it probably is. Review the item condition, whether it is new or used, and any damage described.

Be realistic when purchasing used items. People have different definitions of quality and condition. Remember, just because the seller says the item is in "like new" condition, doesn't mean you will feel the same way. A 25 year old item is likely to have some wear and tear so don't be overly critical of the item when you receive it. Take the condition of the item into account BEFORE you place your bid.

Use PayPal...

Take advantage of PayPal for safe and fast funds transfer between you and the seller. PayPal is eBay's preferred way to pay. It is a system that lets anyone with an email address securely send online payments using their credit card or bank account. eBay members can use PayPal to quickly and easily pay for all the items purchased on eBay. PayPal’s industry-leading fraud prevention measures make it a safe way to pay online.

When you’re shopping on eBay, look for items that are covered by PayPal Buyer Protection. With it, you get free protection of up to $1,000.00 USD on your purchases. To determine if your item is eligible, look for PayPal Buyer Protection in the Seller Information box on the View Item page.

The more that you know about your seller and the items that you are bidding on the safer you, as a buyer, will be. Spending some time doing research before you place your bid will help to ensure a positive buying experience.

eBay Auction Home Business Tutorial: Avoid This Common Listing Error - By Chris Bryant

My previous eBay auction tutorials have focused on deciding what to sell, and for how much. These are obviously important decisions, but there's one more vital part of your eBay auction posting that we've got to discuss - and that's the content of your auction listing!

Whether you're selling your own ebook of soup recipes or old soup labels, the sale itself all comes down to the listing you write. After all, the listing is the initial interaction you have with potential buyers, and it doesn't get any more important than that!

When I started selling on eBay eight years ago, I made some classic mistakes that I've since corrected, and I've seen plenty of other beginners make the same mistakes. My next few eBay auction tutorials will focus on these mistakes, so you can avoid them and maximize your sales and profits. After all, that's what we're after!

If there's only one piece of advice I can give you about eBay listings, it would be to spell-check your listings, including the title. And while you're spellchecking, make sure to spellcheck the spelling of every word in your description and title!

A misspelled word in your title can cost you sales and money. For example, let's say you're selling homemade jewelry. When you create your eBay auction listing, eBay will ask you for a concise description of your item. If you misspell jewelry as "jewlry", eBay buyers who search on "jewelry" will not see your item. It takes only a moment to spellcheck your listing, so make sure to do so!

Misspellings of this type are so common that there are actually eBay buyers who make money buying items like the "jewlry" we just discussed. These buyers pick up valuable items very cheaply, since most interested buyers won't even see it in their search results due to the misspelling. These same buyers turn around and sell the item with a well-written description and make big money. There's nothing wrong with them doing this, but you don't want to miss out on sales just because you didn't spellcheck your item description.

The eBay listing feature doesn't have a spellcheck feature, but I'm willing to bet that your computer has a word processor program such as Microsoft Word that does. I recommend that you write your eBay auction listing in Word, spellcheck it when you're done, and then copy and paste it into the eBay window. This way, you can also save your description for easier editing in the future.

Starting your own eBay auction home business is one of the best decisions you can ever make. It's paid off big for me, and I know it can do the same for you. By taking the time to take care of details - by using your "sense" - you will soon be making BIG dollars on eBay. So get started, and I'll see you tomorrow with another eBay auction tutorial!

Where to Find Cheap Car Auctions - By Robert Darby

If you look in the right places their are a lot around and are often just as the more expensive versions. There are some down sides to the cheap car auctions. Some do not have the best verity and the quality may not be as high as some but they are still worth a very close look if you are in the market for a cheap car auction.

Pros

The best thing about cheap car auctions are that because the out lay is so low to begin with if they don't have what you are looking for you can move on with out losing too much money. Other then the stat up cost there are also great option with cheap car auctions that you might not find with some of the other more expansive options. Such as the selection will be higher because people will always go to the auctions that has the highest customer base and because of the low sing up fees you will find that they have a lot more member s then some of the more expansive car auctions out there.

Cons

Because of the large customer base you will also find that you will have a lot more competition for most of he vehicles that are available and that may al so push the prices a lot higher then if there was not as much competition. If you are looking for a particular type of car then you may find that they are a bit harder to come by in some of the cheaper car auctions and if you really need that type of car you might be better o going to a car auction that specialize in the particular type of car.

They are not to many reasons to pick one or they other it really just depends on what you are looking for in a car auction. If you don't need all the fancy options and are not looking for anything that is out of the ordinary you will find that a cheap car auction will suit you best. If you need all the help you can get to find a particular car ten you might want to look at the more expansive options that are available which will make things a lot easier in the long run. When it's all said and done you really need to decide what it is that you want and need and make you decision on that. I wish you good luck with all you car buy adventures and hope you find the bargain you are looking for.

The Payment Methods on eBay - By Russell Darden

No longer is cash the only accepted mode of payment for purchasing an item. As the concept of trading evolved, so did the means of paying for your goods.

Today's electronic world pushes the envelop further. With the advent of online trading systems such as eBay, there are now numerous ways to make a payment.

First of all, on eBay, the mode of payment depends on the agreement between the buyer and the seller. Most often, the seller will specify his or her desired payment method. In these cases, the seller often has the final word in the decisions regarding payment modes. However, the buyer may still communicate with the seller regarding another way to pay if it suits both parties.

The following is a list of common eBay payment modes.

Cash On Delivery

Cash is, well, cash. It is NOT a method of payment that I endorse if you plan to send it through the mail. This payment method can be done through a third party courier system or by the buyer and seller meeting each other at an agreed place. The advantage of a cash transaction is that the exchange of the item for payment is done in the presence of the buyer and the seller. The seller can even send a representative in his place. However, some people will not accept the risk present when two strangers meet. After all, you never know who you are really handing your money over too, or if you will ever see them again in case of a problem with the purchased item. Also eBay does not endorse cash OR cash wire transfers as a payment method. This is important, because if you pay by cash, you do not receive protection under the eBay Standard Purchase Protection Program. You also do not retain any proof of your payment, and therefore will have little to no remedy for transaction problems.

Paying with personal check, cashiers check or money orders

You can pay with a personal check, cashiers check or a money order as long as your seller accepts this payment method. Writing checks is easy and safe. After you win the auction and send your information to the seller, you will receive detailed payment instructions. The advantages of using personal checks include the fact that you can trace the payment to a specific mailing address and you can use it to provide a proof of payment. Under the eBay Standard Purchase Protection Program (minus $25 for processing costs), a personal check is covered up to $200.00. Finally, most banks offer a stop payment service if problems arise and the customer complains before the check is cashed. Then there are some money order services that may have the option to also stop payment. The disadvantages for writing a personal check include the fact that the seller must wait for the funds to clear. Also your payment may be almost impossible to recover in cases of fraud. Finally, due to the fact that banks can stop checks, many sellers do not like accepting checks because they are too easy to cancel.

Paying with a credit card

There are some sellers that are set up to take credit card payments. They either have their own merchant account or is set up through another payment processor. This means that you would have to provide your credit card information to the seller. The advantage of paying this way is that the payment is convenient, immediate, and traceable. It also provides limited liability coverage. Credit card companies typically provide some level of identity and purchase protection whether you are paying with your credit card through PayPal, or directly to the seller. If you are not sure or have any further questions. then you should contact your credit card company to learn more. There is one thing to keep a note of. Since credit card purchases are generally protected by your card company, if problems arise you must go through your card company before applying to the eBay Standard Purchase Protection Program.

Escrow.com is the payment of choice for purchases over $500. Escrow.com holds the buyers money from the seller until the seller delivers the item. Only then will the funds be released to the seller. This system makes for a very safe, although highly procedural transaction.

Wire Transfer

This is the payment of choice for countries that do not carry the PayPal service. Wire transfers are risky because the buyer usually has to wire over the funds before the seller sends the items. The chance for non-delivery of items is high.

Other Payment Systems

The number of third party payment services is steadily on the rise. Their systems for payment vary. However, to be successful they must be convenient to use and safe as well.

PayPal

Then there is PayPal. PayPal is the payment of choice on eBay. In fact, eBay owns PayPal. Using PayPal is easy, convenient, and relatively safe. PayPal acts as like an internet ‘wire transfer After signing-up for PayPal, one may send cash to anyone with an email address using the PayPal system. The advantage of using PayPal is that PayPal also has security features that safeguard against fraud in case there is a dispute between the seller and the buyer. They offers PayPal Buyer Protection on qualifying items - up to $1,000 in free coverage. You can get additional limited protection through PayPal's Money Back Guarantee. Also the payment is traceable. You can track the status of your payment using My eBay or your PayPal account. It is convenient and immediate. You can pay it directly from the item listing page and the seller would see the payment deposited directly into their account.

eBay Auction Home Business Tutorial: Don't Charge Too Much ... Or Too Little! - By Chris Bryant

In my last few eBay auction tutorials, we talked about what you can sell to make money on eBay and start your own home business. But whether it's an ebook packed with your favorite recipes or custom coffee cups, one of the most important decisions you have to make is the price of your item.

As we all know, the highest bidder in an eBay auction wins the item. There's also a "Buy It Now" feature on Ebay you can use to sell your item for a set price rather than auctioning it off, and that's the way I sell all of my items. If you use "Buy It Now", the purchaser can decide to pay your asking price and purchase the item immediately, rather than having to wait for the end of the auction.

If you're selling a physical item, you have to take inventory and shipping costs into account, and we all have to pay various fees on eBay in order to sell items there. These fees vary depending on how much your item is sold for. If you’re selling a physical item, don’t try to cut the price of the item and then charge a lot for shipping. For example, there’s a certain type of computer cable I occasionally buy on eBay, and I’ll see the same cable listed at $5 from one vendor and 99 cents from another. Why? The vendor selling it for 99 cents asks $8.50 for shipping! EBay is really starting to crack down on this behavior, and frankly, it’s a really good way to discourage customers from making future purchases.

When deciding on a price, the key is to NOT price the item too high…but you also have to avoid selling it at too low a price, because that will make people think that your item has no value.

I went through that personally. When I started selling my first ebook on eBay, I priced it very low, thinking that I'd make up for the low price by selling a lot of them. It just didn't work out that way. If you put too low a price on an item, instead of being happy that the item is cheaper than others, it makes people wonder what's wrong with it. After a while, I raised the price, and started selling more ebooks!

You may have to experiment a bit in order to find the best price to offer your eBay customers, and that's just part of being in business. The key is not to ask too high or too low a price. If you have a competitor on eBay selling the same thing you're thinking of selling, check their feedback to see if they seem to be selling quite a few of them, or hardly any. Adjust your price appropriately, and if one price doesn't move items, try another. And when it comes to selling on eBay, don't be afraid to ask for a premium price - as long as you're offering a premium product!

eBay Auction Home Business Tutorial: Do Your Research! - By Chris Bryant

In past eBay auction tutorials, we've talked about how there are people just waiting out there to buy you knowledge, and the best way to sell it to them is through writing ebooks. But whether you're going to sell ebooks or CDs, you need to do some research before diving in and selling. I know you're excited about starting your own eBay home business, but spending a nickel's worth of time on research can save you dollars worth of regret later.

Before you post your first item up for sale, search for related topics on eBay to see what your competitors are selling. If you're going to write an ebook full of fishing tips, use eBay Search to look for other items with "fishing tips" in the title, or maybe even just "fishing". The eBay Search window can be found in the upper right of the main eBay page (www.ebay.com), and on every other page on the site!

Don't be too concerned if there's someone else out there selling the same thing you're going to sell, but if there are 1000 other people selling your item, you may want to come up with another idea. Still, through superior marketing (and creating a superior product!), you can still do well. The idea here is to get an idea of how many people are already selling what you want to sell, and for how much they're selling it for.

While you have to be price competitive, don't make the mistake of selling your goods too cheaply, because cheap prices make potential customers think your goods are cheap, and you don't want that. Don't try to beat the competition by having the lowest price - beat them by having a superior product.

Now that you know what your competition is doing, you've got to sit down and create a plan for what you're going to do. After all, if you were driving from California to Florida, you wouldn't just drive your car out the driveway and aimlessly drive around just hoping you were on the right road, right? Right! The road to success must be planned as well. In my next eBay auction tutorial, I'll tell you what this plan MUST include. Until then, get started with your eBay research, and I'll see you tomorrow with another eBay home business tutorial!

How You Can Start Your Own Business with ebay and Wholesalers - By Paul Middleton

After you have cleared the garage / cellar etc. Finding stuff to sell on ebay can be become hard and time consuming work.

You could trawl through garage sales and charity shops but this takes time and can be hit and miss unless you really know what you’re looking for.

The way many ebay Powersellers turn their money making hobby into a full blown ebay business is to buy at wholesale prices and sell at retail.

The great thing is that you can do all your ebay wholesaler research at home on the Internet.
First you can search the Internet for details of what products are available from various wholesalers at which prices. You can compare prices and whether the wholesaler will dropship the product etc. Just as importantly once you’ve found a product or products that your interested in you can check to see how much they’re being sold for on ebay and other places on the Internet. That way you can maximise your chances of making a healthy profit.

This use of the Internet to research products and their market makes the whole process extremely fluid and flexible increasing chances of success.

People who make money on ebay using wholesalers aren’t doing anything new. They’re doing what people have done since the advent of currency, buying products at one price putting their mark up on them and selling them at a healthy profit. The benefit of doing this on ebay is that you don’t need a shop or a website. Ebay acts as a front to your business and does so for free (ok they take a percentage of any sale but they don’t actually charge you for shop space – no sale no fee).

It will involve a fair bit of work to start with but as time goes by and you build up relationships with good reliable wholesalers whilst ditching the duds the whole process will become streamlined.

It’s important to work out the product life cycle of what you are selling so you can move from a product coming to the end of it’s profitability to the next ‘best thing’ in good time to keep the profits up. Again the Internet will assist you in this market research. Just keeping an eye on what other people are selling on ebay at which prices is a good way to gauge at what stage of its profitable life a product is.

So the way to be profitable with ebay wholesale is RESEARCH, RESEARCH and more RESEARCH !!

Paul Middleton is a successful Internet entrepreneur. He shares some of his secrets on his website where he shows people how to make money online working from home. Included are details of how to make money with eBay wholesalers.

Buying A Web Site On An Auction Site – And Why It May Not Be A Good Idea - By Lee Lister

So you’ve made the decision to buy your new web site and you’ve seen loads of them for sale really cheaply on an auction site. That’ll give you a good business start won’t it? Unless you are very careful – probably not. Here’s what you should be looking for.

The Seller: Look at who is selling the site. Do they have good feedback. Have a look at what else they are selling and what they have recently sold. You will get an idea of how prolific and professional they are. You can also see if they continually sell the same kind of web site week in week out. Check out their claims and how believable their sales pitch is.

The Web Site: There are generally two kinds of web sites for sale – the Template and the Unique Site.

Template Sites are standards sites that are quickly produced with just a different domain put to them. You can recognize them if they have one or more of the following characteristics:

* New domain name. Quickest way of finding this out is to do a whois check to find out when the domain was first registered.

* No PR – check the PR of a site using the Google tool bar. A PR0 site has not been around very long and certainly has not been heavily marketed.

* No links. Check the domain on marketleap.com

* Not in any search engines. Enter the domain name into the major search engines to see if it there – or use marketleap.com

* Affiliate only sales. There are many sites that are built around one affiliate option. If the affiliate is a major site – you are going to be competing in a very crowded market place.

* Drop ship sites. There are many of these advertised usually as no need to hold stock etc. Again a very crowded market place.

* One product sites - usually an ebook. You need to have variety to establish a successful business.

* A similar site is for sale from more than one seller or over more than one month.

* No Web Logs available. A Web log showing regular visitors from a variety of search engines and other links is very useful.

* No checkable sales figures available. Some sites are shown with copies of payments that can be found on many other web sites.

* Suggested earnings if you sell so many products a week. There is a common pack of template web sites that provide this example in their accompanying sales letters. Common sense states that you will not sell lots of products in your first few months of business. Similarly sales pitches that provide unreasonable income predictions. You will find that the established internet marketers are very careful to include legal disclaimers on their sites.

* Copies of existing businesses. All the sales, success etc of the existing business, if they are true, belong to that web site and are the result of much marketing and hard work. Therefore they are not transferable to a new web site. What is transferable is the skills and knowledge of the seller – but they rarely come with the sale.

Things to be wary of:

* Established site just means that the site is up on hosting. It does not mean it has been there for some time or sold anything.

* Sites that show a lot of visitors that are plainly from one place are usually as the result of traffic packs or placement on a traffic exchange program.

* Article only sites – also called AdSense sites. Yes these are a good start for your new business BUT Google is cracking down on sites put up only to attract advertising and clicks. Your business needs to be much more varied than just relying on one income source.

* Submitted to thousands of search engines. This is useful – but many of these search engines are of little value – just bringing floods of spam. The major search engines do not generally send their spider bots around after just one mechanical submission. They now require much more of an enticement.

* The insistence that the site remain hosted with the seller. Whilst this may be convenient it does hold you hostage and may mean the loss of your site in the future. Similarly many sellers make their money from high cost hosting.

Unique Sites have been established for some period of time, have existing traffic, links and sales. They appear in the major search engines and have natural traffic from these entries as well as from articles, PR etc. For these qualities you should expect and be happy to pay a premium – but you will get an excellent start to your internet business.

One last note: If you do buy a site, make sure that the domain is transferred to your name and registration account.

How to Make Money on eBay - By Chris Chenoweth

If you do not have a website, one of the easiest and most profitable ways to make money online is with eBay. It is the largest online auction site, drawing millions of people every day. It is the first place most people check out when they are looking for items, both new and used.

You can sell almost anything on eBay from small inexpensive 99-cent items to cars, boats, real estate, and everything in between. By placing your item on eBay, you are placing it in front of millions of prospective buyers.

There are many ways to make money on eBay. I started out as a seller by trying to get rid of leftover items from a garage sale. I listed some books, clothes, and toys. I made a very small profit on the toys, a reasonable profit on the clothes, and a very nice profit on the books. That’s all it took for me to get hooked on eBay.

From that day forward, my goal was to make money by finding as many bargains as possible and selling them for a profit on eBay. I had always loved garage sales but now I had an additional reason for seeking out bargains.

I armed myself with as much knowledge as I could find by using eBay tools to search out certain items and learn what they sold for. I also learned how to determine the value of those items by a lot of trial and error. I only worked with items that I was reasonably familiar with and felt comfortable trying to sell.

Once I felt confident enough to start my eBay selling, I started scouring garage and yard sales, estate sales, and local auctions. I also used my local newspaper classifieds. Bargain hunting became my “business” and it was a business that was always challenging and exciting.

The more knowledgeable I became, the easier it was for me to find great bargains. I learned how to know if an item had profit potential by looking at it. I was amazed at what some people considered “junk” and the prices they sold for. (Remember, most people can be “haggled” with to get the price even lower!)

My most successful items (remember, I just chose a few that I was comfortable with) were items I bought at estate sales like textiles (bedspreads, doilies, etc.) and old tools. “Old stuff” sells quite well on eBay if the item’s condition is good. If the condition is not good, make sure you are honest about that in your ad. You will still get bids.

I would not recommend attempting to sell items you know nothing about. If there are certain items you would like to sell, make sure you acquire as much information about them as possible. You should know what the item usually sells for and how much it is really worth. You do not want to lose money; you want to make money!

Once you are ready to start selling, learn about eBay’s rules and guidelines for selling. When you click on the word “sell” on the main eBay site, a page comes up that contains many resources and tools for sellers. Make sure you read over all of the information because it will increase your chances of being successful at selling on eBay.

Now you are ready to sell. Your ad is the most important piece of the selling game on eBay. The text and graphics in your ad will have a huge effect on the price you can get for your items. The better your pictures and description are, the better your price will be.

You will need to decide how long you want your auction to run. There are 3-day auctions and 7-day auctions. As a rule, the 7-day auctions are good because it gives people a longer time to bid up your items. Of course, the items you are selling sometimes dictate which type of auctions you should use. Make sure you check to see which type of auctions similar items sell for.

You can also choose to include a “Buy it now” button. This button allows buyers to purchase your item instantly at whatever price you set. Before you use this option, make sure you are comfortable with the price you are setting and make sure the price is not too low.

How do you make money on eBay? Do your homework, find your items, list your items, and wait for the bidding to begin! It IS possible to make money on eBay!

Get An Online Auction Degree at eBay University - By Chris Ryerson

That is right you read this title correctly, eBay has a training center called eBay University. Now they don’t give out any traditional diplomas at this institution of higher learning because you won’t need them. What you do get is real world practical advice, tips and tricks to making the most of your eBay or online business.

Where is eBay University?

Through eBay university you can quality and easily take classes at one of their on site locations or even in the comfort of your own home. They have offer two different formats for learning. There are the short 2 to three day seminar classes where you can attend in person at some location close to you or you can attend an online course right on eBay itself. Each has it’s advantages and disadvantages and it really depends on your time.

What Will I learn?

There are many different classes offered at eBay University and you can learn a wide variety of topics and skills. However the classes typically focus on sellers and how they can make the most of their business. The courses will start with the most basic information like how to sign up for a new account all the way to the finer points of selling like price auction pricing strategies using sales data.

How will I learn?

This depends a good deal on what format of classes you take as online courses are obviously done differently then the in person workshop location you can also attend. How you will learn will change somewhat between these two options. Most of the eBay courses are really set up to be a adult friendly teaching environment with lots of hands on activities and lots of practical learning.

What Courses Should I Take

If you are looking at becoming an active seller on eBay then you will want to start with a “Selling Basics” course. Even if you are already have a seller account and made a sale or two taking the “Selling Basics” course is a great idea because you will learn a few new tips. Second you will want to take an advanced course “Beyond The Basics”

Either way you slice it you will come out a winner with eBay University programs. They are very reasonable cost wise to sign up for and the amount you will learn is incredible. This can really help accelerate your online business.

5 Hot Tips for Increased eBay Sales - By Peter Andrues

Have you ever wondered how those Powersellers sell hundreds or thousands of dollars a month on eBay? Once they have the buyer in front of their auction, and they’ve read the description, what encourages them to place a bid?

Include a Picture: You MUST include a picture with your listing. Statistics show that auctions with at least one picture in the listing will sell 65% better and for 23% more money than an identical listing without a picture, and the quality of that picture is also important. Make sure that you use a high resolution scanner or a good quality digital camera for your picture. Remember, a picture with bad lighting or out of focus looks amateurish and won’t make anyone want to buy from you.

Clearly Define Your Terms: Let your buyers know up front what your expectations of them are. Have the "small print" clearly visible in the listing and give specifics on things such as: payment methods, shipping methods, estimated delivery time, refund policies and any other business practices you might have. Remember your buyer must feel confortable with you, they are about to send money to someone they don't know and are naturally suspicious. The absolute best way to put your buyers at ease is to offer a 100% no questions asked money back guarantee. Sure you may get a couple of buyers who'll take advantage of your generosity, but you will entice many more buyers to take a chance on you and in the long run will increase your sales figures dramatically.

Show off your feedback: eBay feedback is the only way your buyer can tell about you and your business practices. Hopefully, as a conscientious seller, you have an excellent feedback profile. A great way to take advantage of your positive feedback is to copy and paste a selection of the feedback comments you’re most proud of directly on the item’s description page. If you have 100% positive feedback, make sure that every prospective buyer is aware of it.

Buy some upgrades: eBay offers a wide selection of listing upgrades to accentuate your auction listing. Homepage Featured, Gallery Featured, Bold, Subtitles, and Border are a few of the upgrades available. Some of these are quite expensive while others are only a few cents each, but, if you are listing in a crowded category a listing upgrade can be just what you need to make "YOUR" auction stand out.

Create an About Me page: Bidders love "About Me" pages and you can create a simple page just by putting a little bit about yourself or your business on there. You can also offer a link to your mailing list or a special offer such as "Free Shipping" to the people who seek out and find your page. Your "About Me" page is also the only place on eBay where you can have a link to a webpage other than an internal eBay page. These outside links are the place where you refer your buyers to your business website where you can sell to them directly. With hundreds of buyers a week looking at your auctions and your "About Me" page you will have a continual stream of new customers visiting your site.

This year over 500,000 people will make a full or part-time income on eBay. By utilizing some of the tips we have covered, you have the opportunity to increase both the volume and amount of your sales.

Get More With Less Work: Higher Auction Prices On eBay Can Be Yours - By Chris Ryerson

There are tons of people that are now making full time living from eBay and online auction sites like it. There are even more that are making a really nice second income to supplemental their full time job. If you are an active seller on eBay on of the biggest hurdles every serious seller has to make is from the occasional lister to a professional seller. Moving your eBay business form a hobby to a valid business can be difficult. There are many things to think about. One way to help move your business from a fun hobby that provides a little extra cash to a full fledged business that provide tons of extra money is to work on getting higher closing bids. This seems obvious yet many sellers struggle to find ways to eek out extra profits from their listings.

There are some simple things that anyone can easily do when listing the will improve the profitability of an auction. These tips will help close auctions with higher bids and end more auctions with a successful closing bid.

Many sellers on ebay are content to list items quickly and they rather get lots of items up for sale and try to earn money through having more auctions up at any one time. This is a fine way to do business if you are willing to manage a ton of auction listings at any one time. However if you want to have less auctions listed at any one time and still remain profitable then a little extra work on the auction listing will go a long way.

Clean Photos

One way to make sure the items you have listed on eBay do better is to provide good pictures. Again many seller simple don’t want to take the time to get good photographs of the item they are selling. They will use stock images from a drop shipper at best or if they take their own photos of a product many are content to post images that are blurry, poorly lit and do not provide a very flattering view of the product. If you want to make extra on your auctions and have more items sell then take the time to get some really good pictures and make sure you always list at least one picture per item. Often the more pictures you put into a listing the better the average selling price will be for that product.

Great Description

Another area where many sellers that are rushed for time fail is by providing unclear descriptions of the items. Take the time to write in clear and grammatically correct English. Explain in a much detail as possible about the product you have up for sale. Let the user know the condition of the item and any important details they might need to know. If you can provide model numbers, manufacturer information and details about the item. You also want this to be clear and easy to read. If you auction copy is long then make sure you use headings and sub headings so the view can scroll to the information they are seeking.

Use HTML

If at all possible it can really help if you use HTML. There are many programs and even auction templates that can help you if you are not a programmer. By adding a little HTML in your auction your auction will look professional. Buyers are more willing to spend a little more if they feel they can trust the seller and by having a great looking auction listing that effectively uses some HTML you will help give this impression. This is what takes you from an occasional seller listing junk from their garage to a serious eBay seller with a business behind them. This will entice buyers to look for your auctions and seek you out.

As you can see by providing a little extra for your auctions you can easily increase the number of bids you receive for each item and more of your items will end in a successful sale. These are just three beginning tips as there are many other things you can do. However focus on building your eBay business strategically and focus your efforts on one area at a time. Don’t fall into information overload with two many tips, tricks and tweak. Instead take the advice above and start working on these three simple things. Once you do these things with all your listings then it is time to take your business to the next level and learn some more. Many eBay sellers are not successfully simply because a they don’t do anything they get overloaded with information and instead don’t change anything and keep selling in the same way.

Wholesale Video Games: Can I Really Save Money? - By Joaquin Reveron

Reality is that in our year 2006 more retail shops are opening up. More video games rental stores are appearing every month around the block. And the truth is, that thanks to that offline competition we can save a little more when we make a games purchase. But what if I would really want to buy wholesale games. What if want to start my own retail video games rental store anytime soon. Would I purchase video games and the accessories that come with each console at retail or perhaps at the so often 10% discounts from many local or Internet stores? Of course I will not. There is no way someone could make a profit from purchasing merchandise from retail. At least, not the full profit potential you may have if you purchase in the lowest possible price- the wholesale games price. We can still make a profit if buying at retail prices, but rest assure it is going to be a very complicated profit day if deciding to go in such route. Most businesses online that sell tangible items do not get into their full profit potential because they are either buying from the wholesale video games distributor or in general words, from the incorrect wholesaler or supplier. Once we start business, we must have the right people and the companies to back our small business success and such business entity long-term value.

So, how do we get the most out of wholesale video games purchases or out of the wholesale business itself? It is very quite delicate, but interesting indeed if you pay close attention. Before even starting to purchase wholesale merchandise in singles or in bulk, we must plan ahead of what may very well be our number one priority when making a tangible sale, both online and offline. If your company primary business plan is to focus more on quality rather than price, you may do very well with a games distributor or wholesaler that is not the cheapest in the market. Buying low to sell high is usually ideal in strong competitive markets like online auctions. It will all depend on the product itself. However, you can choose the famous route of what many other online and offline stores initiate. Such stores buy low without thinking of quality and then at the end sell high. The market and the niche or sub-niche that you select will tell you what prices are suitable for your wholesale business and what prices are not accepted by the consumer.

Dealing with wholesale video games in bulk can make impressive profits. Can make you a very well living depending on your knowledge and education, yes indeed. You can either open an online store and sell the newest consoles when getting distributors and wholesalers that not many people know or perhaps, that not many people start using or you can open an offline video store and make even bigger profits depending on the location of such store in the community. Today there are many people making a living out of the sale of tangible wholesale items both at eBay and offline. Many are making thousands of dollars doing something that they love and have a passion doing- playing video games on the weekends and selling them at their own home-based-business online store. When given the opportunity many wholesale games opportunity seekers just want to save a few dollars, others want to invest in their financial future further on. In what would you invest today? I knew the answer for that years ago, I hope you now discover yours soon enough. Mine is to buy and sell video games whenever I have an opportunity. Would you be the next to profit from the wholesale business?

Wholesale Distributors are one of the business components Joaquin offers. His focus today is on assisting people create wealth through the Wholesale Games business.

Steps You Need To Take In Order To Be A Successful Reseller - By Gregg Hall

Okay, so you have decided that you want to operate your own close out or liquidation business. There are some things that you need to know as you get started in your new venture that will help you to be more successful.

The first thing that you need to do in order to be successful as a seller or reseller is to identify a particular niche that you want to specialize in. You will be far more successful and profitable by specializing in one area than by trying to be all things to all people in your business. It will also help you with the learning curve inherent in any business as it will be much easier to learn about a particular niche than a broad range of products.

Investigate the competition in the niche that you want to target and get an idea of what they are pricing their products at and how they are marketing them. If you intend to market online, research your competition on eBay as that is the largest collection of merchants anywhere on the planet.

Now that you have identified a niche and researched your competition it is time to find the products to resell. This is the crucial part of your business as it is the price that you pay for the items that will determine your profit when you resell them. Look for wholesale suppliers, search eBay, and frequent garage sales, whatever it takes to get the products at the right price.

Don't try to rush out and be the Walmart of your particular niche. Start small and grow your business using the profits from sales. It will be much less stressful to operate your business in this way and it will not cost you a fortune if you make a mistake. As a hint here, use eBay to test a market. This is the easiest, quickest, and the least expensive way to find out if a particular market will be profitable before dumping a ton of money in it.

Test a few different products in your niche and see which ones are the most popular and the most profitable. Once you have found one or two products target these and become an expert on them, finding the best prices you can and become the best you can be at marketing them. Once you have done this, repeat the process with additional products.

Now, you need to complete a business plan which does not have to be a formal thing like that you would submit to a bank, just an outline for your own use so that you know what steps you need to take to make your business successful and keep from falling into a rut of procrastination and inaction.

Beginners' Guide to Making Money on eBay - By Justin Power

As John Paul Getty, the oil billionaire, once observed the only way to become seriously wealthy is to own your own business. Easy if you are entrepreneurial by nature, less easy if you are not. There is, however, one sort of business that can be set up without much capital and with little or no risk yet which has the potential to turn anyone into a multi-millionaire. A business, furthermore, that doesn’t require experience or specialist skills and which can be started at home on a part-time basis. In fact, all you need to get this business going is access to a computer with a broadband connection and a digital camera.

Ever since eBay was launched in 1994 the media has been full of stories about how ordinary individuals have become richer than their wildest dreams of avarice thanks to the online auction site. Only this summer, for instance, Entrepreneur magazine carried a feature on ten young entrepreneurs (none over the age of 30) who have built up vast, international companies on eBay. A good example is Tiffany Tanaka, 24, who sells things via eBay on behalf of other people (www.wesellthings4U.com) and is currently turning over US$2.7 million a year. Another is David Wirtenberg, 28, who built up a US$10 million jewellery business (www.outrageousdiamonds.com) from the sale of a single, diamond ring on eBay in 2003.

What makes eBay such a fantastic money-making opportunity is its simplicity. Essentially, it allows anyone, anywhere in the world, to buy or sell just about anything. The scale of the operation is mind boggling. It sells a car every two minutes and a CD every 7 seconds. Last time I checked there were over 10 million items on offer and more than 168 million buyers. You could be selling to those 168 million buyers within minutes of finishing this article for, literally, a few pounds. And, selling for a very substantial profit, too.

What could you be selling? Most new eBay entrepreneurs get started by auctioning unwanted items from their home. This can prove to be remarkably lucrative (I have a friend who has made over £3,000 since Christmas selling off unwanted clothes, books, children’s toys and china) and also provides an opportunity to understand how eBay works. After you have the hang of it the secret is to find a product area that interests you. Different ideas include:

Dealing in something you know a lot about. Many people choose products related to their hobbies – everything from fishing rods to model trains.

Selling something you can source elsewhere (possibly on the internet) for less.

Selling for other individuals. Many of the most successful eBay sellers are simply selling other people’s unwanted items on commission.

Selling for other businesses. For instance, you could sell unwanted stock for local retailers.

As you become familiar with eBay you will start to see potential everywhere. Favourite categories include clothes and shoes, musical instruments, electronics and collectables - but the choice of products is endless. The most expensive item sold on the site to date was a Gulfstream aircraft for £2.5. Recently, Ronan Keating's leather trousers went for £5,000.

Getting started, by the way, couldn’t be easier. All you need do is log on to www.eBay.co.uk and complete the online registration which will ask you for a user name, password, e-mail address and a credit or debit card for verification purposes. This process won’t cost you anything.

The next stage is to create a seller's account online, for which you have to provide credit/debit card details and bank account information for verification purposes. You then follow the listing instructions, giving product details, the duration of your listing - from one to 10 days - and the starting and reserve price if you want to set one. You have to pay a listing fee, which depends on the item's value and is a maximum of £3. If the item is sold, you pay eBay a final value fee which will be around 5.25 per cent of the closing price.

Once you’ve joined, you can sell anything with a few clicks of the mouse. To list your item you log in to the website with your personal ID, choose a category for your item, type in a description, details of how you propose to send the item to the buyer and a price and you’re ready to start your auction.

You really need to include a digital photograph of the item and the better your sales copy, the greater the price you are likely to get. Once an item is listed all you have to do is sit back and wait for the buyers to start bidding.

Most auctions last seven days and the bidding can be fierce – with much of it taking place in the last few minutes of the sale. If you want to optimise your chances of success you should always:

Be honest about what you are selling.

Write eye-catching advertisements and copy.

Set a realistic starting price or offer an item without any reserve price at all.

Keep your buyer well informed.

Don’t despatch the goods until you have received payment.

Speaking of payment, eBay make it easy to collect money via credit card thanks to their own online payment system, which is called PayPal. In fact, of the best things about eBay is that it provides its sellers with plenty of support and advice. There is an eBay university, for instance, that holds both real and virtual courses. Also, an eBay ‘community’ where you can pick up information and tips from eBay ‘power sellers’. Their most useful resource is probably something called Seller Central which is to be found at http://pages.ebay.com/sellercentral. If you have a question about selling, the chances are that it will be answered here. This portal is divided into a handful of main categories including getting started, best practices, advance selling and news and updates. Another useful sales advice section on the eBay site is to be found at http://pages.ebay.com/startselling.

Take Your Auction Business Global - By Christine Crowley

Do you sell on auction sites and are wondering how to create more business,a bigger sales base and get the most from the items you sell? Have you read that selling internationally is the way to increase sales and quickly development a larger sales base but you are afraid to sell internationally because of the confusion with customs and paperwork? Are you concerned about how to calculate consistent and accurate shipping charges each and every time you ship internationally? Do you know how to package to deter theft?

Here are some helpful tips to ease your international shipping experience. First we will talk about paperwork. Depending on which shipping company you choose, you will be given a shipping form or address label asking for shipper and recipient information , contents, value and basic information that pertains to the delivery of the package. Now depending on where your package is going, it's contents and value you may need to use a commercial invoice.

A commercial invoice is the primary document that customs uses to clear a package and it declares to the country of import what you are sending. The commercial invoice will ask for the same information that most shipping forms ask for and the information on both should match exactly. On the commercial invoice and your shipping form you will be asked to describe your item and the way you describe your item will in most cases either make for a smooth transaction or will hinder the clearance of your item.

The way you describe your item should answer a few questions for customs rather quickly. Customs should immediately understand what the package contains, how many pieces or items are inside, why the package is being imported, and what it is used for.

Here is an example of a poor description ..computer parts. That description is not telling customs what they are looking for. Here is an example of a complete description: computer keyboard,1 xyz brand/refurbished for personal use only, not for resale. That description is telling customs exactly what is in the package a computer keyboard, a brand name if applicable, how many are contained within the package the condition the keyboard is in,and why it's being imported. The way you describe your item is imperative to a smooth transaction. Take the time to give customs the information they need to clear your items as quickly as possible.

We will now cover how to calculate accurate and consistent shipping costs. I have read many times that auction sellers are surprised how easily their profits are diminished by higher shipping charges than what they thought they would be but here is a way to calculate consistent and accurate shipping charges. First have a dedicated scale that you will use each and every time you weigh your package. Be sure to weigh the package in its final and complete stage, in other words, the actual package you will be taking to the shipping service. Bring your completed package to your shipper of choice and have them weigh it using the scale that they base billing on. Then go home and weigh that same package on your dedicated shipping scale. If the package weighs less on your scale, then calibrate your scale to match the shipping company's scale. Remember that the shipping company is going to calculate shipping costs by whatever the package weighs at their location not by what it weighs at your home. If you use the same shipping company each time this process will be easier since your own scale will be calibrated accordingly.

Next we will talk about how to deter theft. This is pretty simple but very effective. Remove any old labels on the packaging that you use. Do not leave any information on the outside of the package that indicates there is something other than what is actually contained in the box, this is also useful for customs clearance because you don't want customs thinking there is a computer inside a box that actually contains, for example, childrens clothes.Next trick is even easier because you simply tape all the seams of the box. This will deter someone who should not be opening your package from doing so. This will also help maintain the integrity of the package which helps prevent damage to the contents.

I hope you found this information useful. Get shipping internationally it's easier than you think.

eBay's Rate Increases Goes Unchallenged - By James Newton

Today, August 22nd is the day of the new eBay store listing increases. I am betting, that last night, you saw a heavy increase in listing traffic to get one month of listings at the old rate. eBay store owners staying up late to get all the new listings in place prior to the new rate increases, or increasing the cost of their merchandise in an attempt to absorb the rate increases. Will any stores shut down? Will we see a decrease in the store listings? Will we see prices driven up? Will buyers have smaller selections? The next 45 days will tell.

Auction format is the fuel that moves the eBay machine. Auction format is what eBay started with. Auctions, and selection are what brings the shoppers to eBay. Shoppers jump in the auction in hopes of getting merchandise at a ridiculously low price. Store owners would often take a loss on an auction item as a strategy to promote their store listings. Relying on impulse buyers to use the buy it now button. This may no longer be a profitable strategy.

Devina Mehra, a lead analyst at First Global Securities, wrote a note to clients in which she voiced support for the rate hike. "We believe eBay is moving in the right direction towards restoring its growth trajectory," she said, as reported in a Seattle Times article.

"Under the new fee structure, a $50 item sold through the store will generate $4.46 in fees for eBay, up from $3.27 before the change," wrote Ben Charny, the author of the article. "Under the old rules, store items cost 27 percent less to list than auction items . . . . As of Tuesday, however, the difference will be just 3 percent."

eBay hopes to encourage high volume sellers to go back to the auction listing format, or, at least collect the full revenue no matter how the item is listed or sold.

This move has caused one group to call for a boycott of eBay, and another group has reportedly written to Google in hopes of them getting an auction site up. There in lies the problem for sellers, no viable place to migrate to.

The timing of this move was perfect. The busiest time of year is just starting. Back to School, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and the ever profitable Christmas season is just starting. Merchants have to sell during this time of year in order to make a profit. From September to December is the make or break quarter for most merchants. If they don't make huge profits during this quarter, then they are not likely to have the finances to carry them through the remainder of the year.

The question then is, will they still be able to generate a profit? A 27% loss in profit is a big hit. Let's say I am a merchant that deals in Woman's Clothing. I want to sell a $50.00 dress on eBay. I have to purchase that dress for $25.00. That is a typical mark up of 100% . In order to offer a selection, I have to purchase each size. Small, Medium, Large, and Extra-Large, and each color, Blue Red and Green. Seven dresses so that a shopper can find the one dress in their size and color. That's $175.00 invested in hopes of doubling my money. Now I pay for store fees, picture storage fees, listing fees, promotional fees, a fee if I want a gallery picture, and when it sells, I get hit with final value fees, and Pay Pal fees. Let's say I sell 4 of the 7 dresses in a month. That's $200.00. Wow, I'm up $25.00.. No, the Store fees alone were $15.00 for the most basic store. And after all the other fees, you are very likely to be out of some cash.

At this point, as a merchant I have three choices. Get out of business, increase my prices, or find a place to sell with a lower overhead. The places to sell with lower overhead do not have the traffic (yet). So I increase my prices. If I increase my prices, then why buy my product on-line? You can find it for the same price in a retail store, and you don't have to pay for shipping. So, my sales are likely to go down anyway.

Has everyone forgotten the benefits of selling and buying on-line? Large Selection at better than retail pricing. Selling with low overhead means better profits, and reduced prices to the buyer.

One blogger wrote "I think you have it upside-down when you state:

The success of their initiatives will be measured by the actions of their sellers.

The actions of the buyers is what is driving eBay. As long as the buyers show up, the sellers will follow."

eBay got to where it is today by first attracting sellers. Buyers come for the large selection, and the impression of low prices. When they start finding out they can get it cheaper somewhere else, sellers will follow the buyers, and eBay will start scrambling to solicit sellers back.

The next 45 days will tell. If we can get MSN, Yahoo, Google, Amazon, or some other large player in the game, then auction format shopping will continue to dominate e-commerce, and eBay losses it's monopoly. If not, then the way people shop on-line will switch to specialized web sites, and auction based shopping no longer dominates e-commerce.

Untraditional Method for Business Marketing - By Claude Bourgoin

There is a new, untraditional way for reaching your target market. Online auctions have become so extremely popular that it's now become a great extention to your marketing initiatives. There's is a lot of talk about online auctions because people enjoy them, the variety of products and the buying and selling experience they offer, have made them some of the most visited sites on the web. For businesses, they offer all kinds of new possibilities, from the sales and inventory management perspective to marketing research and web site promotion.

Auctions get an estimated 70 million visitors a month. With all this traffic some promote their products in order to take advantage of this visibility to promote products a large group of targeted potential customers. Leveraging the auctions combined traffic to promote your product can give you more exposure than any single web site's traffic could, or even offline advertising at a price point that isn't available anywhere.

Among the first to realize the potential of auction were the computer and hardware vendors who quickly realized how to move obsolete inventory thought them.Today many offline stores realize that their unsold inventory is doing them no good collecting dust on their shelves, so it's an effective way to offer them to interested buyers, letting the buyer fix the selling price and generate the extra income from stale inventory that could, otherwise become a total loss.

From a marketing perspective some use auctions for new product price testing and testing sales copywriting efforts. It's an effective and inexpensive way to test new product prices is to see what people are willing to pay for a product offering what your new product promises. Some sell their product at three or four different online auctions, then calculate the average selling in order to determine the suggested selling price before launch of a new product. Similarly some test the copywriting to determine the best description and conversion potential.

In order to get started all is needed is an online auction store, allowing you to advertise your store with links back to your site and your product information page. You'll need well designed ads offering product details with all the proper images, effective copy writing and of course the proper use of keywords. This will allow you to position this auction post in front of the proper audience, leveraging the power of the auctions search own engine and driving more traffic to your site and generating interest for your product.

Online auctions were never intended to complement marketing and promotion efforts, they were created to move products and create value from the Internet. But over the years these sites have attracted so many buyers that they've become a great traffic generation tool for your web site, giving your products and your company more exposure and international visibility. In many cases, they won't replace your offline initiatives, but for a lot of products they are an excellent alternative to the traditional ways of moving inventory, gathering marketing information and generating visibility.

Author, Claude R. Bourgoin (MBA), is an auction seller and buyer as well as an online marketing consultant and internet consultant and contributing author for a site dedicated to providing quality online auctions.
